Products Description
LIKEWAY GLASS supplies customized SGP laminated glass for architectural glazing, structural glass systems, large-format panels and other applications requiring a high-performance interlayer.
The glass provides stiffness, strength and surface durability, while the SGP interlayer contributes to:
Interlayer adhesion
Composite action
Residual integrity
Shear transfer
Edge stability
Post-breakage performance
The final performance therefore depends on the complete laminate configuration.
Glass Options
LIKEWAY GLASS can combine SGP with different types of architectural glass, including:
- Clear float glass
- Low iron glass
- Tinted glass
- Heat-strengthened glass
- Tempered glass
- Coated glass
- Ceramic fritted glass
The appropriate glass type depends on the project's optical, thermal, structural and fabrication requirements.

Why SGP Interlayer?
The main reason to select SGP is its high stiffness.
Conventional PVB is relatively flexible. This flexibility is useful for many standard laminated glass applications, but it also means that the interlayer contributes less to the structural behavior of the laminate.
SGP is substantially more rigid.
According to Kuraray's technical information for SentryGlas®, its ionoplast interlayer can provide approximately five times the tear strength and up to about 100 times the stiffness of conventional PVB.
This difference becomes increasingly relevant as glass panels become larger or the glazing system becomes less dependent on conventional framing.
SGP Interlayer Performance
The key characteristics include:
High rigidity
Reduces interlayer deformation and improves composite action between glass plies.
High tear strength
Helps maintain the integrity of the interlayer under demanding conditions.
High transparency
Suitable for architectural glazing where optical clarity is important.
Moisture resistance
Provides good resistance to environmental exposure, particularly relevant to exposed-edge applications.
Post-breakage integrity
Helps maintain the residual integrity of the laminated assembly after glass breakage.
SGP vs PVB interlayer
The choice between SGP and PVB should be based on the performance required from the complete glazing system.
SGP is not simply a "stronger PVB"
The difference between the two materials is more fundamental.
PVB is widely used because it offers reliable adhesion, safety performance, acoustic options and cost-effective production across a broad range of applications.
SGP is selected when the interlayer's mechanical contribution becomes an important part of the glazing design.
This distinction is especially important for large panels, exposed-edge glazing and structures with demanding deflection or post-breakage requirements.
| Property | SGP Ionoplast | Conventional PVB |
|---|---|---|
| Interlayer flexibility | Low | Higher |
| Rigidity | Very high | Lower |
| Tear resistance | Very high | Lower |
| Composite structural behavior | Stronger contribution | More limited |
| Post-breakage rigidity | High | Lower |
| Moisture resistance | Excellent | Requires appropriate edge protection |
| Optical clarity | High | High |
| Typical use | High-performance / structural glazing | General laminated safety glazing |
| Relative material cost | Higher | Lower |

SGP Laminated glass Manufacturing Process
The production of SGP laminated glass requires controlled preparation and lamination conditions.
Glass Preparation
Glass is cut, edge-finished and processed according to the approved drawings before entering the lamination process.
Any required drilling, notching or special shaping is normally completed before lamination.
Cleaning
Glass surfaces are carefully washed and dried.
Cleanliness is essential because particles or contamination trapped between the glass and SGP interlayer can affect the visual quality of the finished laminate.
Lay-Up
The glass and SGP interlayer are assembled according to the specified glass make-up.
For multi-ply glass, accurate positioning of every layer is important.
De-Air Process
The assembled laminate undergoes controlled de-airing to remove trapped air before final bonding.
Autoclave Lamination
The pre-assembled glass enters an autoclave where controlled temperature and pressure consolidate the glass and SGP interlayer into a permanent laminate.
Final Inspection
Finished SGP laminated glass is inspected for:
- Dimensions
- Optical quality
- Edge condition
- Bubbles
- Delamination
- Processing accuracy
- Surface condition
Only after inspection is the finished glass prepared for packing and shipment.
FAQs About Laminated Glass with SGP Interlayer
1. Is SGP interlayer suitable for structural laminated glass?
SGP is widely considered for structural and semi-structural laminated glass because of its high rigidity. However, the complete glass system must be engineered according to the project's loads, dimensions and support conditions.
2. Can SGP laminated glass have exposed edges?
Yes. SGP is particularly suitable for applications with exposed laminate edges because of its resistance to moisture-related degradation.
3. Can SGP laminated glass be made with tempered glass?
Yes. Tempered or heat-strengthened glass can be incorporated into suitable SGP laminated constructions.
4. Is SGP laminated glass suitable for large panels?
Yes. The high rigidity of SGP makes it particularly relevant to large-format glazing where interlayer deformation and structural behavior need to be considered.
5. Does SGP laminated glass always allow thinner glass?
Not necessarily.
Glass thickness should never be reduced simply because SGP has higher stiffness. Any reduction must be supported by appropriate structural calculations and comply with the applicable project standards.
6. What information should I provide for an SGP laminated glass quotation?
Ideally provide the glass make-up, dimensions, application, support conditions, processing requirements and applicable standards. If the final specification is not available, LIKEWAY GLASS can review the available project information before quotation.
