What is Insulating Glass?

Insulating glass consists of multiple glass panes separated by support strips filled with molecular sieve desiccants and dry gas. It features a double seal using butyl rubber and sealant.

This type of glass reduces noise, provides thermal insulation, and enhances energy efficiency. Using inert gas in the cavity improves sound insulation and energy savings, preventing condensation even at lower temperatures.

For optimal performance, insulating glass must maintain long-term drying, sealing, and bonding capabilities. High-quality raw materials are crucial. A typical structure includes:

Aluminum Spacer/Warm Edge Spacer

The aluminum strip should have uniform thickness, with evenly distributed ventilation holes. Additionally, it must undergo anodic oxidation or decontamination treatment.

 

Warm-edge spacers are structural components made from a polymer composite material, UPVC, combined with 0.1mm thick 304 stainless steel to create a cavity. This cavity is filled with molecular sieves, isolating the original hollow glass sheets and providing support. They have lower thermal conductivity compared to aluminum spacers, making them more energy-efficient.

 

Air Space

Typically, the gases used to fill insulating glass include argon, krypton, and xenon. Argon is easier to obtain and more affordable, making it the most commonly used inert gas for air spacers.

 

Sealing

The internal butyl sealant serves as the primary seal for insulating glass. As a hot-melt adhesive, it offers low water and air permeability along with high viscosity, making it an effective barrier against moisture and air infiltration. The external seal can be either polysulfide or silicone structural adhesive, allowing flexibility in selection based on specific glass applications. Double-sealed insulating glass units can last up to 20 to 40 years.
